Egyptian Style Clock Set in Patinated Bronze and Sienna Marble

About the Item

Stylish French clock set in the Retour d'Egypt style based on French Empire clocks from the early 19th century. The clock set upon a good rectangular Sienna marble base on which are four well decorated bun feet holding a further patinated bronze rectangular base. The front of the base has applied gilt bronze floral mounts. A patinated bronze obelisk rises from the base with an Egyptian figure on each side kneeling upon a cushion. A further applied on the base of the oblisk is a winged serpent stick between two cornucopia. The drum case for the clock movement and dial is fixed to the centre of the obelisk with a baiting eagle upon lightning bolts ( a representation of Zeus) to the top. The movement drum well decorated with concentric circles of Amthemion, leaf and dart and other decorative motifs. The clock has a glass bezel and white enamel dial on copper with Roman and Arabic numerals and well pierced gilt bronze hands. The movement is an 8 day timepiece movement regulated by a lever escapement ( so no need for a pendulum). The sidepieces are candlesticks, set on a square but shaped Sienna marble base with ormolu moulding of stiff leaf and dart decoration rising to a further Sienna marble cube with applied ormolu laurel leaf mount. To the top of the pedestal is a classical maiden standing uoon a ball with her arms crossed and a candle sconce upon her head.
