FINE CIRCA 1895 FRENCH AUTOMATON INDUSTRIAL LOCOMOTIVE MOVING GiLT BRONZE CLOCK

Royal House Antiques Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this very fine and highly collectable Antique circa 1895 French Automaton Industrial Locomotive moving gilt bronze clock sitting on top of a solid marble base with bronze feet These clocks vary massively in price, once recently sold for over £150,000 on 1stdibs, which was fully restored and look brand new. They have two mechanical winding features, one operates the clock and the other turns the wheels, I have wound the clock and it works as does the turning mechanism however both will need serving as they have sat for a very long time unused, I can have this done with a very fine clock restorer should the new owner wish I will include the full specification on this piece below which I found online, my example is in very fine order indeed, the sale includes everything pictured and that’s it, if you can’t see it it’s not included Dimensions Height:- 45cm Width:- 47.5cm Depth:- 23cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask c.1895 French Animated Locomotive Clock Description: A wonderful example from the industrial series popular in French horology during the late 19th century. When the animation movement is wound the train’s wheels and linkages spin Case: The gilt, silvered and patinated bronze case is in the form of a 19th century steam locomotive. The engineer’s cab houses the clock while the boiler has the barometer and supports the smokestack with the attached thermometer. Below are the six animated wheels with numerous steel linkages and to the front is the cow catcher. The whole sits upon a black marble base with gilt-bronze feet and rails. Dial: The white porcelain chapter ring clock dial has black Arabic numbers for the hours, a gilt bronze centre and steel-cut hands. The white porcelain aneroid barometer dial has the indications in English, a gilt-bronze centre and two indicator hands. The engraved silvered thermometer scale shows the temperature in Centigrade and Fahrenheit. Movement: The eight day time and strike clock movement has a horizontally mounted balance platform and strikes on a gong. The large animation movement is mounted between the wheels, is wound out the side, each winding and has a start/stop lever incorporated into the design above Any questions please feel free to ask before you bid

Massive Chinese Ormolu High Relief Bronze Elephant Automaton Music Bracket Clock A truly magnificent Chinese Guangzhou studio automaton clock , large triple deck body supported on the back of four elephants , extremely ornate bronze case, floral relief, paste-set around the automaton windows and dial, ormolu bronze case, automaton glass waterfall and swimming ducks on the front and both sides, music plays hourly, palm trees on each corners spins as part of the automaton as well. Case: heavy bronze with ormolu gold gilt with large elephants Dial: porcelain dial with Roman numerals Clock Mechanism: 8 day mechanical movement with quarter striking, with studio mark Automaton: plays hourly, 3 large windows on the low deck showing spinning twisted glass tube to imitate waterfall, horizontal glass tubes made to look like river with animating ducks, very impression automaton, palm trees on the corners of upper decks rapidly spin as part of the automaton, 2 ribbons spinning on the center of top double gourd. French Musical Automaton Picture Clock

One of the most amazing timepieces we have ever acquired that offers far more than meets the eye, this incredible work of art blends the beauty of a painting with the mechanical complexities of both a cylinder music box and an automaton. While it is clear to see the integrated clock residing within the arched giltwood and gesso frame, when activated, this painting quite literally comes alive. As the cylinder mechanism within plays its lovely tune, every character in the farrier's shop becomes animated – from the group of farrier's toiling away at the forge and anvil forming the horseshoes, to the wagging of the charming terrier's tale. This musical automaton picture clock is attributed to Xavier Tharin of Paris who was the preeminent creator of this fantastical "moving pictures", especially this particular farrier scene. His process mixed oil painting and hand-colored lithograph images that were layered starting from the back, middle and foreground to craft the complex series of movements throughout the painting. A look inside this particular work reveals the complex mechanism (with the three gongs, pendulum and cylinder components immediately visible) which must run the timepiece, the cylinder musical component plus the multitude of moving elements in the painting...a truly incredible feat considering the technical prowess to create just one of these devices.
