'Raindrops' by Stewart MacDougall, Mounted Sculpture on Birch Base, c. 2000

About the Item

'Raindrops' by Stewart MacDougall was executed in early 2000's in Santa Barbara, CA, composed from birch and mirrored acrylic. Gorgeous dusty rose pink color with blue tinted mirror, complete on both sides mounted on a birch base. Acquired from the artist's estate. ABOUT THE ARTIST Stewart MacDougall was an accomplished furniture designer and artist across multiple disciplines, born in 1927 in Pasadena California. MacDougall attended the Chouinard Art Institute, later to be mentored by architect Rudolf Baumfeld, a student of Le Courbusier. Macdougall was one of the lead designers for the Monsanto House of the Future in Disneyland in 1957. MacDougall's lifetime accomplishments include works and designs published in furniture, sailboats, golf equipment, and sculptures. Often most noted is his collection of Mid-Century Modern furniture along with Kipp Stewart for Drexel which included a collection of chairs, tables and cabinets. Many of these furniture designs are now sought-after collectors items for art and design enthusiasts, with demand similar to designs by Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen and Edward Wormley. In his later years, he designed and built several large, colorful and distinctively named sculptures (Hal, Prancing Horse, High C) that reside in Santa Barbara, and a smaller piece that is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This piece, titled 'Raindrops' was completed later in Macdougall's career, after decades of artistic accomplishments in Mid-Century Modern that was the stylistic foundation for the hit TV show 'Mad Men' to later Post-Modern designs and art pieces demonstrating his ability to maintain relevance while changing to different mediums at different points in time. This sculpture is an excellent opportunity for both an art collector and a design enthusiast as it bridges the two worlds with a one of a kind fine art sculpture from one of the more prolific names in Mid-Century Modern design. • Leather Kangaroo Magazine Pouch Holder by Dimitri Omersa, 1970s
    By Dimitri Omersa
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
A beautiful large cognac colored leather Kangaroo magazine holder / sculpture by Dimitri Omersa, circa 1970s. Attractive light patina throughout, this charismatic leather animal can serve so many different uses, and makes a fantastic companion while also being a wonderful collectors piece to cherish. Some creative ways to use this Omersa is to hold magazines or small books / pamphlets. Or a bouquet of flowers, examples of these two uses can be found in the photos. Another idea which we did not photograph is for cables and cords - consider your laptop or cell phone cables, they can sit in the pouch when not in use, and can even wrap over or around the arms to manage the cords from getting tangled. Other uses could be simply as a collectible sculpture placed on a credenza, sideboard, bookshelf or mantle, on the floor as a floor sculpture or as a friendly companion for an otherwise lonely house dog or cat, or by the front door as a greeter to your guests and when you return home after a long day. We think it's great to name your Omersa, as many Omersa owners do, and we also believe every home needs at least one Omersa. Omersa's have so much personality and character - each one was hand-made (so every one is unique, just like us) of the highest quality leather, beautifully stained and waxed, this one approximately 45-55 years ago, and each of the years this one has lived - it has developed its own stories to tell through its gorgeous patina, it's no wonder most Omersa owners have developed personal relationship with theirs - not too much different than a house pet. We love our personal Omersa's that we keep at home, they always make us smile. A client of ours got one after his dog had passed, he said he wasn't ready yet for another - so an Omersa became the perfect friend at a time in need. From 1927 though 1950 leather pigs using scrap leather from hand made luggage were made by "Old Bill" for the department store Liberty of London. Around 1958 the business was transferred to Dimitri Omersa when Old Bill retired, and it was at this time that Dimitri came up with the ideas for other leather animals. Around 1963 Dimitri's leather animals caught the eye of Abercrombie and Fitch, at that time purveyor to the fantasies of the rich and famous. The animals were advertised in the A&F catalog from the mid 1960’s through to the late 1980’s. As you can see in our photos, we have a large collection of Omersa leather...

  • 'Generation' Bronze Sculpture Table by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, c. 1964 Signed
    By Philip and Kelvin LaVerne
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
This important and documented bronze sculpture table named "Generation" by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne was sculpted circa 1964 and was featured on the cover of “Philip & Kelvin LaVerne: Sculpture III". Its large size allows this to be used as a coffee or cocktail table, console table or display table or can be simply displayed as sculptural fine art. This pièce de résistance for collectors of Philip and Kelvin LaVerne is exceptionally rare and highly coveted. Within one single work of functional fine art the artists explored several different techniques the LaVernes were known to employ. Two heavy cast bronze figures, a boy holding a cat and the opposite side a girl, holding the table top which features a gorgeous torched bronze surface with inlaid colorful enamels, one bearing the LaVernes signature. Another acid washed bronze...
