Antique Carved Giltwood Eagle Statue

About the Item

This carved giltwood eagle statue is portrayed with outstretched wings and legs pulled up as though just landing upon something. There is a wooden peg on the bottom of the statue indicating it was formerly pegged as ornamentation onto a much larger structure at one time (19th century). The front of the body, its head and the wings are completely detailed. The back is left relatively plain except for the back of the upper neck and head, which is carved and gilded. An attachment is on the back for easy wall hanging. Generally, eagles symbolized strength, immortality, and courage. They were one of the most popular birds used in ornamentation since antiquity.
