About
A fine bronze casted sculpture of a French Setter. The bronze has the original olive-brown patina. It is made in France, circa 1890-1900. On the front at the base it is "Salon des beaux Arts" On the back the mark of the bronze caster: BD Vrai Bronze, Paris. Signed on the side: C. Masson. The sculpture has a beautiful patina and is in good condition.
Clovis Edmund Masson (France, 1838-1913) was a student of the French sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye. He specialized in animal sculptures. From 1867, he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon until 1881.
Over the years, more than 50 of his works have been exhibited at the Salon des Beaux Arts.
His work is often playful and inventive with a certain licence from his mentor, Barye. Casts vary in quality but are often of quite a high standard. Over the years at least fifty-two of his works were exhibited at the Salon by Masson, chiefly of the cat family with titles such as ‘African Leopard defending its Prey’ in 1881, some deer such as ‘Fighting Stags’ in 1883, and horses, one of which is possibly based on Barye’s Cheval Turc.
