About the Item

Louis-Ernest Barrias (Paris, 1841 - there, 1905) Venus Marble, h. 59 cm, 5 Signed "E Barrias" The renewal of classical beauty was exploited during the course of the nineteenth century as a virtuous formalism. The silent reference to an antiquing aura, typical of which sculpture or pictorial work had been modeled according to the vestiges of antiquity, would in fact have added a positive connotation to the artistic artefact, exemplified by the ordered symmetry of the composition. The well-known classical regard for the weighted measurement of body harmony also recurs in the present sculpture, which looks to the modern age through the subject depicted, apparently a young girl with a mirror in her hand. In fact, it is possible to recognize in the female image characterized by an ethereal semi-nakedness becoming heroic at the same time, the representation of the goddess Venus. Since the classical age the typizations through which more and more differentiated images of the goddess were defined were synonymous with the updating of the sculpture, turning to a greater humanization of the deities in general. Venus / Aphrodite taking a bath (as in the case of Aphrodite of Sinuessa of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples), about to go out or enter the water, as well as the type of the goddess who brings Paris the apple of victory in the context of the Trojan War, were joined by more charming representations of divinity. The present finds archetype, albeit different in conception, in the Venus of Capua, a 2nd century AD Roman copy of a bronze original from the 4th BC (now in the collections of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples), depicting the divinity holding the shield of Mars / Ares, The sculpture is the work of Louis-Ernest Barrias, a sculptor of the Parisian epic of the turn of the century. Son of art, the artist learned the rudiments of modeling from his father, a porcelain painter; the transition to the world of sculpture occurred through the knowledge of Pierre-Jules Cavelier (1814-1894), teacher and supporter of the most classicist academicism. In 1858 he was admitted to the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in the capital, where Barrias was able to appreciate the lesson of additional teachers, such as Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875), a favorite of Napoleon III's Second Empire style. He won the coveted Prix de Rome in 1865, and the subsequent artistic maturity derived from him the order of the decorations at the Parisian Opéra and the Hôtel de la Païva of the Champs-Élysées.
