Patinated Bronze Antique Sculptural Group of Andromeda and Perseus by Grégoire

About the Item

This fine antique French sculpture depicts a moment from one of the most famous tales from Classical mythology, that of Perseus and Andromeda. Made of patinated bronze and featuring parcel-gilt highlights, the work shows the moment of Andromeda's liberation at the hands of Perseus. Modelled as full length mythological figures, the pair are set on naturalistic circular base that is signed 'L. Grégoire'. In Greek mythology, the princess Andromeda was daughter of the Ethiopian King Cepheus and his wife, Queen Cassiopeia. As the story goes, Cassiopeia foolishly boasted that her daughter was more beautiful than the immortal sea nymphs. In his anger, the sea god Poseidon sent a cruel sea monster to punish the land of Ethiopia. Eventually, the princess Andromeda stripped naked and chained to a rock as a sacrifice to the monster. However, the Greek hero Perseus saw the beautiful maiden in distress, instantly fell in love with her, and saved Andromeda from death.
