Thomas Forester Revivalist English Majolica Jardiniere

About the Item

A cobalt blue Majolica jardiniere made by Thomas Forester & Sons circa 1888 in the Revivalist style. The jardiniere features Gothic-style dragon handles and Renaissance-style architectural designs. Revivalist styles became quite popular during the 19th century, as countries looked to the past for both artistic inspiration and societal values. Revivalist designers sought to establish cultural and political supremacy by creating works of art that recalled a shared, and often idealized, national history. This jardiniere, made by Thomas Forester & Sons, displays both Renaissance and Gothic Revival styles, and thus the values of those periods. The jardiniere’s Corinthian-style columns reference the Italian Renaissance, which was considered to be the height of Western culture to which all artists should aspire. The dragon handles recall the Gothic Christian art, and speaks to the Gothic Revival movement’s efforts to correct the Victorian era’s decline of social standards and morals by introducing religious-inspired designs. Forester’s design reflects the nineteenth-century English desire to become a political, cultural, Industrial, and moral world power by displaying historicizing styles in the contemporary medium of Majolica.
