19th Century Black Forest Hand-Carved French Liqueur Stand

About the Item

19th Century black forest hand carved liqueur stand with original glass was meant to adorn the library or office, even perhaps the living or drawing room, and provide a top-notch touch of spirits usually partaken after a meal. Hand-scuplted from indigenous oak, it includes serving glasses and a lidded decanter for the enjoyment of your repast. Circa 1880s Black Forest carvings often depict forest animals, particularly bears, but also dogs and horses with trees and foliage. The style originated by Swiss carvers in the town of Brienz, Switzerland, but spread trough out Europe, with craftsmen in France, Germany and other countries. From humble beginnings of a cottage industry in the early 1800s it grew by the turn of the 20th century to become the major employer of an entire skilled community. Trough out Europe popularity of style grew and the carvings were exhibited at many international exhibitions such as London Great Exhibition of 1851, Chicago World’s Fair 1893, and Exposition Universelle Paris 1900. In Europe, they became a symbol of luxury and wealth. Measures 14 H x 8 W x 7 D.
