Guido Andlovitz Lavenia, Elegant Vase in Glazed Ceramic, 1930s

About the Item

Guido Andlovitz Lavenia, elegant vase in glazed ceramic, 1930s. He was born in Trieste to Edoardo, a chemist in Grado, and Carmela Pasqualis. During the First World War his family was displaced to Florence where he attended the Galileo Galilei Technical Institute. At the end of the conflict he was in Milan where he attended the Brera Royal Academy of Fine Arts , where he was a pupil of Piero Portaluppi , and graduated in Architecture at the Milan Polytechnic. After his graduation in 1923 he began to collaborate as an artistic consultant at the SCI (acronym of the Italian Ceramic Society of Laveno ) of Laveno Mombello introduced by his teacher Portaluppi. In 1927 with SCI he participated in the III Biennale of Monza, collecting Papini's personal appreciation . In 1927 he became director of production dedicating himself to the design of artifacts characterized by interchangeable shapes and decorations to combine high-level design with mass production. The years 1925 and 1929 are the most profitable of his work when, close to the lines of thought of Giò Ponti , at the end of the 1920s he reinterprets the decorations and forms of the Lombard eighteenth century, proposing modern versions, especially the works of Clerici , who had immediate success with the public and critics. Famous are the series in hard earthenware with decorations of playful figures called Old Milan and the following ones with Lago Maggiore decorations . His works denote an acute understanding of what was happening in the cultural environments of his time, opening a sort of professional rivalry rich in fruits and consequences for Italian design with Gio Ponti.
