Fine George II Mug Made in London in 1734 by Thomas Farren

About the Item

This fine mug stands on an applied circular foot and has a baluster main body and everted rim. This piece has a scroll handle and the front is engraved with a contemporary Armorial surrounded by a floral and foliate spray cartouche. The mug is fully marked in the foot and has a very good colour. Thomas Farren was a Royal maker and was subordinate Goldsmith to George II 1723-42. His most important pieces are most probably the fountain and cistern, of 1728, at Burghley House Lincolnshire. Measures: Height 3.75 inches, 9.38 cm. Diameter 3.1 inches, 7.75 cm. Weight 8oz.

    A very good large silver swing handle basket of pierced oval form. The arched swing handle with two cast female busts arising from a leaf capped double C-scroll support. The cast and applied rim of shaped foliate and floral entwined decoration. The central bowl of the basket engraved with a rocaille cartouche containing an armorial. The top of the handle is decorated with a leaf form cartouche within which is the crest of a deer. The sides of the raised basket with hand cut pierced decoration.
