Paint-Decorated American Pedestal Table with Toleware Style Decoration

About the Item

Paint-decorated American pedestal table with toleware style decoration and gameboard-like graphics, 1830-1840, northern new England origin: Small-scale American card table with a scalloped top and skirt, a square, tapered pedestal, and a scalloped base with spherical bun feet. The white-painted background is beautifully embellished with shades of scarlet red, green, blue, and tan, using a design that is precisely what is seen on tole-painted American tin ware of late 18th and early 19th centuries. The carriage style pin striping is typical across rural paint-decorated fancy furniture, but the remainder of the decoration that is so similar to that on toleware is very unusual. The overall effect has a gameboard-like sensibility, with strong folk qualities, and this fact is further enhanced by its small size. The form is unusual as well among paint-decorated tables. The combination of the construction and painted surface of this example are indicative of the craftsman who produced small-scale country furniture in Northern New England, most specifically in the region stretching from Salem, Massachusetts through Southeastern Maine. The most common related examples are dressing tables, usually with a chrome yellow background, though sometimes in white or grained to resemble mahogany. Chests of drawers are seen with some frequency, usually with white backgrounds, as are small work tables and wash stands, with tapered or turned legs and in all three color schemes. I have not before encountered a pedestal table. I have heard of one other example, with a yellow background, with modest decoration. The construction is of softwood, primarily fir, with cut nail joinery. The undercarriage of the base is solid wood and beautifully hand-carved. This rare and extraordinary table would be a great addition to any collection of American Folk Art and painted furniture. The size makes it useful in practically any space. Condition: There is some paint loss, consistent with age and use, but the overall condition is remarkable and the paint on the top is primarily intact.

  • Dauphin County Pennsylvania Paint Decorated Dower Chest Made for Madlen Nafzer
    Located in York County, PA
Dauphin County, Pennsylvania Paint-Decorated Dower Chest, Made for Madlen Nafzer in 1808 This colorful Pennsylvania German dower chest, with pinwheels and tiny flowers on Robin's egg blue tombstone panels, set on a salmon ground, was found with the descendents of Madlen Nafzer of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Passed down through her family for several generations, the chest is accompanied by a softbound book that details the history of the Nafzer family. It tells the basic story of the woman for whom the chest was made in 1808; of how her family arrived on American soil and of their subsequent moves from Pennsylvania to Ohio to Indiana with the migrating Pennsylvania Dutch Community. Past its striking color and decoration, one of the most spectacular things about this particular chest is its untouched paint surface and early condition. While a lateral portion of the left, back foot is absent, broken and lost during the family's possession, the back of the foot is present and extremely stabile. This had been broken, presumably at the same time, but the original piece was kept and I personally doweled it back into place. I made no attempt to replace the missing side portion, so that the chest could be kept in this unspoiled form, a rare thing among surviving Pennsylvania Dower chests...
