Large Tsimshian Thunderbird Totem Pole by George Mather Sr.

About the Item

(1918-1990). This very large totem pole is a Tsimshian interpretation by George Mather Sr. of one of the famous Thunderbird Totems of Alert Bay, BC, originally carved by Charlie James. It depicts the Thunderbird with characteristically spread wings above a bear holding a human slave. The original thunderbird totem poles may be the most often replicated poles on the entire coast. George Mather Sr. was a member of the famous Mather family of Tsimshian artists from New Metlakatla, Alaska. His ancestors traveled from Old Metlakatla, BC in 1887 to settle a new town in Alaska with Anglican lay minister William Duncan. Mather was a prolific artists based in Ketchikan who produced art, particularly model poles, for most of the 20th Century. Traditional hand carved and painted cedar totem; 9'2" x 6'3". Repainted after 1950. For inside or outside. Totems are both important from a historical standpoint and also a fascinating art form. They are the only art form completely unique to North America. Early civilizations along the Pacific Coast from Washington to Alaska did not have a concept of reading or writing but they did have powerful symbols that were commonly understood. Artists used symbols to communicate the events, beliefs and accomplishments that made his family special. This totem we acquired from an estate in Seattle, WA however probably originated in British Columbia along the coast. • Circa 1900 Salish Totem
    Located in Coeur d'Alene, ID
This old model Salish pole dates to around 1900 and was sold out of the Hudson Bay Fur Trading Co. in Seattle, WA. The pole depicts an inverted killer whale, although the identities of the other figures are unclear. There is a formline human face in profile carved in relief and painted on the front of the base. A rather unusual feature of this pole is the inlaid glass beads in the eyes of the figures and blowhole of the whale. Early model poles sometimes incorporated new, non-traditional materials into their work. A highly unusual and early pole. Northwest Coast cedar totem with original Hudson Bay sticker. Patinated with cabin smoke. 15" PERIOD: Circa 1900 ORIGIN: Northwest Coast SIZE: 15" Family Owned & Operated Cisco’s Gallery deals in the rare, exceptional, and one-of-a-kind pieces that define the history of America and the Old West. Simon Charlie "pole of wealth". Carved in Duncan, BC 1958 for Patrick Pryor who is in the timber business. Compared to the "pole of wealth" in Duncan, BC, you will see Simon's fingerprints. The adzed marks on the bear are identical to this totem. Also, the happy and sad faces are almost identical including their orientation left and right. This pole was carved by Simon in 1988. He used happy and sad faces in some of his work to notate good times and bad times. 9'2"H x 20" at base. Charlie was trained by famous Kwakwaka'wakw totem artist Henry Hunt, at the Provincial Museum of British Columbia, but though as Hunt he carved Totem poles, which was not traditionally used by the Coast Salish...

The pole was carved by Lair Forster in Ottawa in 1938 and is an eccentric interpretation of one of the iconic Thunderbird TOTEM Poles of Alert Bay.
