001 Natural
Borders stems from Hella Jongerius's interest in traditional Central American backstrap weaving, in which the loom is tethered between the weaver's body and a tree or post. Because backstrap weaving produces a narrow cloth, two or more pieces are often hand embroidered together using a heavy decorative stitch.
Borders by Hella Jongerius is an Industrial translation of this localized craft technique. The embroidered lines that traverse Borders' surface are archetypal motifs culled from different genres, including botanical, a dotted line, and pied de poule, forming an irregular grid of unique compositions.
Founded in 1902, Maharam offers a comprehensive collection of textiles for commercial and residential interiors. Maharam pillows feature celebrated textile designs from the 20th and 21st centuries, from re-editions of the work of Charles and Ray Eames, Alexander Girard and Verner Panton to recent collaborations with Hella Jongerius, Paul Smith, Scholten & Baijings, and Studio Job.
Hella Jongerius (b. 1963, the Netherlands) is an Industrial designer working from her Berlin-based studio, Jongeriuslab. Since graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven (the Netherlands) in 1993, Jongerius has fused industry to Craft, high technology to low, and tradition to the contemporary by reintroducing an artisanal hand to the Industrial process throughout her work with furniture, ceramics, and textiles. The Dutch design collective Droog produced much of her early work, while later she developed in-depth relationships with companies such as Vitra, Ikea, Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory, and the Japanese design firm Cibone.
