Compact Sheepskin Club Chair Attributed to Viggo Boesen, Denmark, 1930s

About the Item

Beautiful small danish club chair in very good condition. Attributed to Viggo Boesen, 1930s The chair has a simple yet elegant design, the organic bentwood armrests contrast with the soft and fluffy seat and back. The wood is left in original condition and has a beautiful warm color. The chair is reupholstered in a wool ‘Milma’ fabric by Design of the Times. ‘Milma' is composed of 100% virgin wool, a term that refers to the first time a sheep is shorn, producing wool that is cherished for its singular, unrivalled softness. The wool is woven by craftsmen in Italy on ancient velvet looms - a skilful technique that is rare and results in the highest quality that can be found. Viggo Boesen (1907 – 1985) is a relatively little known architect who contributed to Denmark’s signature design aesthetic in the 1930s. In particular, his work reflected Scandinavian ‘Funkis’ style, a Nordic take on Art Deco. In contrast to massproduced materials and the less-is-more approach from the Bauhaus school of thought, Boesen brought a soft, warm and almost naive aspect to design, ushering in new forms of upholstered furniture. Boesen’s original ideas, organic shapes and expressive design lingo were precursors to Denmark’s subsequent stance on modernism in the decades that followed.
