Paolo Buffa, Pair of Chiavari Hall Side Chairs, Restored, French Polish, Velvet

About the Item

Exquisite pair of hall side chairs, attributed to Paolo Buffa, restored with French polish hand finish and new upholstery. Red Burgundy Tuscan woven velvet by top fashion supplier Alessandro Bini. Chairs are showing the typical Chiavari structure and carving, with the turned connection to reinforce the slender legs. These chairs are ideal for framing a console or on an entry hall. Chiavari chairs, the contribution to Italian chair modern design. In the little village of Chiavari there is a centuries tradition for chair making. Two important local designer brought these chairs to anticipate the modern chair design, Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi nick-named Campanino, who made some avant-garde chairs and introduced a new dove-tail 3d joint, and painter Emanule Rambaldi. The most important Italian designer were influenced and made prototypes in Chiavari, Guglielmo Ulrich, Paolo Buffa and Gio Ponti. The last two continued the production in the Brianza area. The superleggera chair would not exist without the Campanino 3d joint. Summary Wood: Solid-wood, beech Frame: Carved, turned, dovetail Restoration: Frame restored and brought back to original rigidity, carries a little rocking due to the elasticity of the frame. Finish: French polish hand applied. Piumaccia, Tampone. Sign of use: Small scuff marks and use signs. Upholstery: Original straw was replaced with new upholstering. Fabric -Description: Velvet, 100% polyester, shiny, Tuscan woven -Manufacturer: Alessandro Bini, Florence -Martindale > 40,000 COM or change of velvet: Complimentary, adds 14 days to deliver after receipt of fabric or approval of sample. Assignment: This chair is usually attributed to Paolo Buffa production. Some are without the connections inbetween the legs. I am assigning this to the mid-1950s. Evaluation. By complexity of work and beauty and restoration by skilled artisan and reupholstering.

Reupholstered. Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. The color of the chair is warm dark brown. On pictures might appear black but is not an ebonized finish. There are some small dents and edge paint loss that are smoothed out and polished in restoration. Please ask for detailed pictures.
