De Sede DS35 Vintage Leather 3 Seater Sofa with Two Matching Armchairs
About the Item
A De Sede living room set featuring a vintage leather DS35 3 seater sofa with two matching swivel base armchairs presented in caramel coloured leather with polished aluminium supports.
With original production starting in the mid 1960s the DS35, along with its closely related design partner the DS31, became icons of outstanding Swiss design and high end manufacture. The two models shared many of the same design elements but with the 35 having a squarer more modernist form to the 31s curves. Both came in a number of variants over the years that included changes to the stitching and piping details as well as changes to the supporting frame and feet.
The set shown here is the DS35 variant with piping details to the leather and with the polished cast aluminium feet to both the armchairs and sofa. It’s a rare version and is presented in very good vintage condition with just a few marks to the leather and aluminium frames as you would expect commensurate with age and use – you’ll also see that one of the seat back sections on the sofa is slightly offset although this does not affect the overall visual appeal or comfort (see pictures for details). For its age the leather is in very condition which would suggest that both the chairs and the sofa has been recovered at some point in their history. However, if this is the case by reference to the photos, you can see that it was skilfully done. The set has in any event been priced with all the above detail in mind.

A de Sede piece lends a strong personality to the room it occupies. One of the world’s most respected furniture design houses, de Sede’s quality Swiss craftsmanship has its foundation in a long history of making expertly designed saddles. Founded in 1965 to build on a successful family-run saddler’s workshop in Klingnau, Switzerland, de Sede now is a leading manufacturer of leather goods and furniture, including sofas, chairs and beds.
At the core of de Sede’s philosophy is a reverence for the complexity and beauty of handcrafted furniture in an age when mass-produced objects are the norm. Over the years, the atelier has built a name for itself in its modular furniture pieces, which are made using the highest quality leather upholstery. The sleek, elegant pieces incorporate functionality with beauty. Amongst their best-selling designs is the DS-600 introduced in 1972. Also known as the Non Stop sofa, it is a sensually curved, snaking modular sofa whose individual pieces can be zipped together to create multiple variations and arcs.
De Sede has collaborated with some of the world's finest design minds, enhancing the prestige and individuality of their products. Designers like Santiago Calatrava, Antonella Scarpitta, Stephan Hürlemann, Gordon Guillaumier and Philippe Malouin have all created pieces with the atelier. Ubald Klug’s 1974 DS-1025, also known as the Terrazza sofa, is an enduring favorite with its cascading levels of leather. In 2017, de Sede expanded its product line to include high-quality leather handbags, which are as thoughtfully designed and beautifully crafted as its furniture. De Sede AG is now part of the Volare Group AG and continues to handcraft its fine furniture and other goods from its factory in Klingnau.

The design bears a close resemblance to the Mario Bellini Cab 413 chair which was released by Cassina in the previous year. Given that both chairs took over a year to prototype it’s difficult to know which took precedence, and although both have a similar look, they feel different: the 413 is softer and more organic and the Korium, firmer and more hard wearing. In a sense both took inspiration from their respective manufacturer’s with regard to the outcome of the designs. Matteo Grassi had a long history of producing high quality and finely crafted saddlery going as far back as 1880, and this shines through in the quality of the construction and stitching. Like the Bellini chair, the point of identification is that the metal framework is an analogy for the human skeleton with the leather acting as the ‘skin’ that shrouds the frame. In a sense the design of the Korium also shares some aspects of the construction of early 20th Century bentwood furniture such as the benches that were created by Jacob and Josef Kohn.
