About the Item

Piet Mondrian limited edition hand-lacquered cube table, Barneys, 2007. Piet Mondrian Holtzman Trust in conjunction with Barney’s New York and Pacific Connections limited edition cube side table. Produced and available for a short period in 2007-2008. Extremely rare. Classic Constructivist composition, light and deep slate gray/blue and black lines. Inspired by Mondrian’s 1930 “Composition in red, blue and yellow" Hand-poured lacquer over wood, hand-polished, layer by layer, taking several days to create the unique, rich, and strong finish. Mondrian (1872-1944) was a contributor to the De Stijl art movement and group, which he co-founded with Theo van Doesburg. He evolved a non-representational form which he termed Neoplasticism. This was the new 'pure plastic art' which he believed was necessary in order to create 'universal beauty'. To express this, Mondrian eventually decided to limit his formal vocabulary to the three primary colors (red, blue, and yellow), the three primary values (black, white, and gray), and the two primary directions (horizontal and vertical). His compositions are the visual, non-representational manifestation of the highest values and pursuits, a depiction of utopian. the expression of serenity and expansive calm. His works were carefully rendered by hand and although they appear machine-like in their precision and geometry from a distance, his meticulous and expressive brushstrokes are apparent upon closer examination of the work. This expression of the "process" of art, evidence of a composition's facture on the final product, is a fundamental aspect of Modernism. It is an expressiveness through "making" that would become the hallmark of the younger generation of American artists that were in contact with Mondrian in the late 1930s and early 1940s. This new generation, the "Abstract Experssionists" included figures like Mark Rothko and Frans Kline. "Art is higher than reality and has no direct relation to reality. To approach the spiritual in art, one will make as little use as possible of reality, because reality is opposed to the spiritual. We find ourselves in the presence of abstract art. Art should be above reality, otherwise, it would have no value for man." - Piet Mondrian (1914).
