Original Mezzotint The Red Dress 1980 by Gatja Helgart Rothe aka G.H. Rothe

About the Item

Original mezzotint on paper entitled "The Red Dress 1980" by well known listed artist, Gatja Helgart Rothe, also known as G.H. Rothe (1935-2007). This collectible work of art has been beautifully custom framed and matted under glass using museum conservation techniques for a lifetime of enjoyment. It is turn key and ready to be hung on a wall and enjoyed for many years to come. Rothe was a prolific German artist of printmaking. The work is a limited edition number 137 out of only 150 in the world. It is signed, numbered, and entitled by the artist on the bottom right corner. Measurements: Dimensions with frame: 36" H x 29.5 W. Dimensions of artwork unframed is: 23.5" H x 17.5" W. Frame's depth: 1.75". G.H. Rothe (1935-2007) is considered a pioneer female artist of the mezzotint and is known as the "Master of Mezzotint". Her work combines technical mastery with vivid imagination. She was compelled to revive mezzotint, which is considered one the most difficult types in printmaking. In 1972, she invented a new technique which allowed to achieve transparency - never before accomplished in mezzotints. Rothe's highly detailed mezzotints focused on graceful dancers, surreal landscapes, and intricately rendered horses. Rothe would always begin her creative process by sketching a simple drawing directly onto the plate with a drypoint tool. She used a rocker to develop the background, rolling and rocking it side to side and piercing the plate with tiny holes for the ink. Using a drypoint tool she further developed the fine details and figures of the drawing. Using elaborate oil dilution techniques, Rothe succeeded in creating an artistic expression which equals that of a painting. Depending on its size, the completion of a plate would usually take weeks and most often months to perfect it. On average, she would spent approximately 500 hours working on each plate. The filigree structures on the surface of the relatively soft copperplate permits only a certain number of print proceedings. Therefore, each edition remains limited to a maximum of 150-200 prints. Rothe expanded the technique's possibilities to achieve transparencies and an extensive variety of tonalities. By discovering a way to mix all colors in the same plate, from the darkest to the lightest, and hand-wiping them into one another, she was able to create highlights, hues, and tones impossible to get when inking each color separately.

  • Original Space Artist Andreas Nottebohm Acrylic on Aluminum Painting KNM 1387
    Located in Tustin, CA
Visionary, abstract original acrylic on aluminum painting by famous NASA Space Artist, Andreas Nottebohn, titled "KNM 1387" depicts a colorful, otherworldly scene on a shimmering sheet of scored metal. This incredible celestial painting frees the viewer from a one dimensional perspective by suggesting a vast and mysterious distance. Information on the back of the painting states, “KNM 1387 Spec 1 of 48 similar original paintings 1996 30 x 24 Acrylic on Aluminum”. Hand signed by the artist in the lower left corner. Very nicely custom framed in a transitional style black frame with wide silver inner lining. Framed, the painting measures approximately 35" high x 29" wide x 2" deep. Unframed painting measures approximately 30" high x 24" wide. One of the key innovators of metal painting, Nottebohm creates what might be called sculptures on a flat plane. By removing microscopic layers from the metal surface, he transforms the material into patterns of shimmering light. The unusual luminous quality of Nottebohm's work comes from the aluminum surfaces he scores, using a variety of manual and machine tools. Aluminum can create light and movement that you cannot create with anything else. It is similar to the sun reflecting on water, and you see one painting from one side and another painting from another side. East German born (1944) Andreas Nottebohm moved to Munich as a teenager and immigrated to the San Francisco Bay area of the United States in 1979, after touring the U.S. for a one man exhibition. While in Germany in the 1970s, he was one of the co-founders of the Society for Art and Science in Munich. Around the time he relocated to the United States, he was invited to participate in the NASA Art...
