"Mannerist Nudes, " Spectacular Art Deco Enamel with Female Nudes in Blue & Gold

About the Item

Created by the greatest master of enamel painting in America's Art Deco period -- Edward Winter -- this large and spectacular panel features two female nude figures, impossibly elongated in the modern Mannerist manner, all executed in rich, brilliant blues, gold and rose. Winter combines the stylized figuration of high style Art Deco with the fractured forms and multiple perspectives of Classic Cubism. The artist studied with Josef Hoffmann in Vienna, and some of his earliest enamels show the influence of Hoffmann's brass bowls and vases. By the 1940s and 1950s, winter was considered a major authority on enamel painting, and authored "Enamel Art on Metals" in 1958, "Enameling for Beginners" in 1962, and "Enamel Painting Techniques" in 1970. The piece is signed on the lower edge, and framed in chromed steel.

"Nudes in Paradise, " Spectacular Wall Charger, High Style Art Deco by Sevres
By Jean Beaumont
Located in Philadelphia, PA
One of the most spectacular high style Art Deco pieces we have ever offered, this large wall charger depicting two female nudes and a deer in an idyllic, color-drenched garden was made in 1927 by the famed Sevres porcelain manufactory in France. The designer was Jean Beaumont, who is known for designing some of the most ambitious and striking of Sevres' Art Deco vases and other pieces in the 1920s and 30s, and the ceramic artist who applied the glazes was Adrien-Auguste Leduc, who worked at Sèvres from 1923 until 1948. Made only two years after the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes was held in Paris, which gave the Art Deco style its name many years later, the theme of this charger -- and its stylized, elongated nudes...
