About the Item
A beautiful etching of the historic Chartres Cathedral outside of Paris giving a detailed view of the interior, including nuns at prayer. The piece is pencil signed "CH. Pinet" in the lower right margin. It is titled "Cathedrale de Chartres le Deam le déambulatoire" in the lower right print and blind stamped "CP" in the lower left margin.
CHARLES F. PINET (1867-1932) was born in Paris, France. He attended the College of Thoissey in Ain. He studied printmaking, specifically etching with Canon Paul Taconnet and Gustave Moreau. Moving back to Paris, he devoted himself to the medium of etching.
Although he traveled the European continent as well as North Africa, his major focus was France. His art captured the major cities and notable sites associated with France.
He was a prolific artist and upon his death in 1932, he left a sizable legacy of graphic images of his beloved country.

From easel painting to massive murals, from original lithography to calligraphy, there is no facet of modern art in which Shahn has not been monumentally successful. Born in Lithuania in 1898, he and his family moved to Brooklyn, New York, when he was eight. He worked as a professional lithographer while attending high school, New York University, the City College of New York, and the Art Students League. In 1925, and again from 1927 to 1929, the traveled in Europe and North Africa. Shahn’s first one-man show, mainly on African subjects, was help in New York in 1930. His superb series od 23 gouaches, The Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti, was exhibited for two years at the Downtown Gallery in New York City. This series is now in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of Art. His works have been exhibited at many museums and galleries in the United States and Europe. Important one-man retrospectives were presented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1947 and at Amsterdam in 1961. The works of Shahn and Willem de Kooning alone were chosen to represent contemporary American art in 1954 Venice Biennale. In June of 1973, Pop Paul VI opened a select Museum of Modern Art in Vatican City. Alon with Picasso, Dali and Rouault, Ben Shahn’s work is proudly displayed. His death in 1969 left a major void in the art world - but his work shall live forever.
