Large Battlefield Drawing Attributed to Hippolyte Bellange (French, 1800-1866)

About the Item

Drawing of a revolutionary battlefield attributed to Hippolyte Bellange, representing the End of the Siege of Lille by the Duke Albert of Saxe on the 8th of October 1792 (the French storm out of the city) according to manuscript legend. Ink and wash on paper. Joseph-Louis-Hippolyte Bellange (1800-1866) studied with Gros. He first made his name at the Paris Salon as a battle painter. He was known for his exquisitely detailed paintings of military revolutionary and Napoleonic scenes. He celebrated French glory. He enjoyed considerable popular and official success. He was Keeper of the Rouen Museum from 1835 to 1852. His work can be found in major art institutions. Our drawing can be compared to a watercolor in the British Royal Collection Trust, called 'Royal visit to Louis-Philippe: review of the 1st Regiment of Carabiniers, 5 September 1843' and signed and dated 1843 (RCIN92020). This is a spectacular, detailed and lively rendition of a battle scene, with a cityscape in the background at the time of the 1790s French revolutionary wars. The dimensions stated include the frame.

French Trompe L'oeil Drawing Circa 1800
Located in New York, NY
This trompe l'oeil drawing depicts the artist's tools -- a black and a red crayon, and a folding steel ruler that was painted with silver pigments, which have blackened with age. They're shown on a sheaf of papers that include a medieval manuscript page, a musical score, and a group of prints. The unifying theme is the artistic patronage of the Medici, the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, who intermarried with the Habsburgs, who were the Holy Roman Emperors. Among the papers are prints by Stefano Della Bella, the Florentine artist who worked for the Medici. They depict a negro page with a horse, and portraits of Lorenzo Lippi...
