About the Item

This is a rare set of 5 drawings concerning the Free Masons Lodge on the Schwind Gasse number 8, in the 4th district of Vienna. Upon the arrival of National Socialism, the Lodge was destroyed and its content. These are the only existing documents about the lodge .Today we find in this house, The Bulgarian Embassy. Robert Gerlach was born in 1887. He studied architecture with Professor Josef Hoffmann from 1906 to 1909, at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna. Upon completion of his studies he worked as an Interior Architect, later he worked as a designer in the workshops of Hagenauer and Bramberger. From the middle of the 1920s he was a successful, self employed, architect, in Vienna. The 5th drawing in the set, floor plane 140 Sitze, you will find as a separate entry, due to lack of space. "Wrestlers, Runners, Warriors, Equestrian, " Set of Drawings, Paul Cadmus, 1930s
By Paul Cadmus
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Drawn during the time when Paul Cadmus produced some of his most famous -- and infamous -- paintings with satiric themes such as "Shore Leave" and "The Fleet's in," but presaging his lifelong interest in the male nude, this set of four scenes depict male figures in scenes that would be familiar to artists going back to Roman and Greek times. One scene depicts two nudes in a wrestling match, another shows several nude figures in a headlong run, a third shows two men in battle, and the fourth depicts a nude figure taming a rearing horse. No doubt inspired by Classical sculptures, this set of drawings captures the energy and dynamics of interacting male figures, but without the very fine detail that he would bring to his countless male nude drawings in the 1950s, 60s and later. The drawings are signed, and the reverse retains an owner's label indicating the drawing was in the collection of William Tregoning, a gallerist who amassed a large collection of male figural art...
