About the Item

Outstanding work of art signed by the famous Eduardo García Benito. Made in vibrant colors and with quick brushstrokes, a bullfighting scene is represented. The artist has managed to capture the precise moment in which the animal grabs the bullfighter and lifts him into the air with force. As usual in his production, it is a composition studied both in shape and color. The purposes followed in his neo-fauvism and Matisse's artistic philosophy are appreciated, which are summarized in that "Accuracy is not the truth"; since the color in the author evokes the truth more than an academically exact picture. It is a work of great pictorial and thematic force. García Benito represents, in the pictorial sphere, the milestone of the Art Deco movement in the Spanish art scene. Born in Valladolid, he received a scholarship from the City Council of his hometown to train professionally in the European city par excellence in the panorama of the time, which stood out in the arts and trained the best artists of the moment: Paris. In this context, García Benito made friends with today's highly recognized artists, such as Picasso, Juan Gris, Modigliani or Gauguin. About Garcia Benito Eduardo García Benito (Valladolid, 1891 – 1971) is known for being the most international Valladolid artist of the first half of the 20th century. He developed his artistic language in Paris and New York, acquiring a unique aesthetic from both destinations that led him to fame and to collaborate with important companies such as Vanity Fair and Vogue. Educated at the School of Fine Arts in Madrid, he received a scholarship from the Valladolid city council to further his studies in Paris, where he settled at the age of twenty-one. García Benito was a young artist with great creative interest, which led him to be in the latest artistic vanguards and rub shoulders with artists such as Picasso, Gargallo, Modigliani and Juan Gris. These friendships allowed him to exhibit in the official salons of the French capital; in addition to participating in the illustration of numerous French newspapers and magazines. In this early youth period, a García Benito with a simple and refined line can be observed, included in the cubist movement and influenced by the forms of Amadeo Modigliani. From this moment on, García Benito delves into the Art Deco aesthetic. Thanks to his renowned artistic career, he developed numerous covers for the fashion magazine Vogue. The contract with Condé Nast in Vogue allowed him to live between Paris and New York, doing portraits for high society personalities at the same time. He was contracted to Vogue until the late 1940s. In 1962 he returned to his hometown and continued to develop his artistic production in a more intimate and particular way.
