Early 19th Century Set of Four Trompe-L’Oeil Oil Paintings on Marble with Putti

About the Item

An early 19th century set of four trompe-l’œil oil overdoor paintings on marble representing allegories of the Arts by Flemish artist Piat-Joseph Sauvage (1744-1818). Painted on marble, each composition depicts two putti, painted to imitate a bronze relief sculpture with green patina, on either side of a grisaille medallion with a different central motif on a turquoise ground. Pastoral Music is symbolized by bagpipes and a shepherd's crook, while Serious Music is symbolized by a violin, Pan pipes, and trumpets. The Arts are represented by an artist's palette, a sculpture bust and a compass, and Sciences by an open book, a globe and a telescope. The Serious Music panel is signed on the lower right by the artist, Piat-Joseph Sauvage, specialized in decorative and illusionistic painting, who decorated the palace of Versailles among other royal residences. This set of four trompe-l’œil oil overdoor paintings on marble, with their antiquity-inspired theme and masterful handling of illusionistic effects, would be a coveted addition to any traditional home. Each measures 23-5/8 x 39-3/8.
