Jacques Gourgue Haitian Painter Oil on Board, Surreal Still Life

About the Item

Jacques Enguerrand Gourgue (1930-1996) surreal still life. Oil on board in excellent condition, original frame. Painting measures 30" H x 22" W. Measures: 36.5" H x 30.75" W, frame size, circa 1960-1970. Considered one of the Haitian Masters, Jacques Enguerrand Gourgue (1930-1996) was a prodigy at age 17. When the New York Museum of Modern Art bought his painting “Tableau Magique” for its permanent collection, Gourgue achieved rapid worldwide fame at an early age. Said to be the son of a Haitian mother, a voodoo mambo, and a French father, a psychiatrist, he painted in two basic styles, one rustic and pretend-naive, the other surrealist, with a brief phase of social realism in between. Gourgue split his later life between Haiti and Spain.
