About the Item
A very fine likeness of handsome nobleman Sir George Douglas, inscribed on the reverse "Engelheart fecit 1824 London." The painting is contained in a beautifully cast bronze doré frame with the sitter's name engraved on the back plate. Sir George Douglas was 2nd Baronet of Springwood Park and the husband of Elizabeth Boyle, daughter of the 3rd Earl of Glasgow. The family home was designed by architect James Graham Gillespie in the early 19th century. The artist, John COX Dillman, was the most talented of the nephews of painter George Engleheart, whose studio J.C.D Engleheart entered at the age of 14. Possibly exhibited at the Royal Academy exhibition of 1821. England, 1821.
