Bernard Cathelin was a French painter and lithographer known for his stylized abstractions of flowers, landscapes, and figures. This signed and numbered lithograph depicts primroses in a small pot. Cathelin used thick palette knife applications and rich colors to produce a sense of light and corporeal form in his paintings, not unlike the work of Nicolas de Staël. Many of Cathelin’s landscapes depict the area of Provence, France, where the artist’s mother was from. Born on May 20, 1919 in Paris, France, he went on to study at the Ecole National Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. A marvelous modern inspired lithograph on wove paper titled Haarlem by Jonny Friedlander. Hand signed in pencil on the bottom right with an annotation of 251/350 on the bottom left. Created in 1976 for the exhibition of the artist at the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem. Dimensions: 30.25" W x 1.5" D x 39.25" H (framed). In very good vintage condition.
