After Will Dyson GALLIPOLI - ANZAC DAY / "Funny thing Bill - I keep thinking I hear men marching!" Known as 'A voice from Anzac' Depicting two ghostly Australian ANZAC soldiers resting by the sea, a lithographic print on large page. Print contains lower right signature - Will Dyson, Also signed lower left in pencil - Will Dyson Six other signatures include (l-r): A Jacka W Dunstan W Joynt J Monash R C Grieve G M Ingram ----------- This is a remarkable piece of Australian military history, and appears to be unique due to the signatures present. The first three and last two are all Victoria Cross winners in WWI: in the middle is Major General Sir John Monash KCB VD, an important WWI Australian General. These individuals all showed great courage under fire, and lived to tell the tale. They are well documented on the excellent Australian War Memorial webpage. There also you will also find the original pen & ink drawing by Dyson which was the source of this print. Published in the Melbourne Herald on Anzac Day 1927, the initial news print version was followed up by 1,000 copies which were presented to the RSL groups around Australia. This would appear to be one of these, but is apparently unique in having the signatures of the above mentioned soldiers. ------------------ Will Dyson was born in 1880 near Ballarat, and was self-taught as an artist. He obtained work with various magazines as a satirical illustrator, and became good friends with Norman Lindsay, marrying his sister Ruby. He spent the war years in England, and volunteered his skills to the Australian Imperial Forces "to interpret in a series of drawings, for national preservation, the sentiments and special Australian characteristics of our Army". In this capacity he travelled to the Western Front in 1916, and was appointed the first official war artist in 1917. He was wounded twice as he proceeded with the troops, recording a very human side of the great conflict. He returned to Melbourne in 1925 where he worked at the Herald. During this time he produced the following print (1927), and returned to London in 1930 where in died in 1938.
