Georgian Child Puppy Dog Portrait Miniature Box Hand Painted Antique
About the Item
This is a very early and rare Museum Quality Georgian hand painted portrait miniature box with an extraordinary image of a child with a puppy dog and sitting on a rocky outcrop in a pastoral nature inspired scene. The portrait miniature is of the highest quality. The face of the child is exquisite. The body is beautifully painted. The black and white puppy dog is absolutely adorable. The nature with the trees, rocky outcrop and sky are wonderful. These elements together create a very special portrait miniature. The box is a lovely burl box. The bottom of the box is inlaid with what is most likely gold in a design - very special! The rarity of the miniature is enhanced by the addition of the puppy dog. Finding miniatures with children and animals is very rare and these are highly coveted. The painting is from a very fine collection of early portrait miniatures that depict animals in the scene.
This is a very early portrait - most likely dating to the 18th Century to early 19th Century.
The jewel is worthy of the antique miniature collections in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
The portrait is 2 inches (5.2 cm) in diameter.
The wood burl box is 3 1/4 inches in diameter and is 7/8 inch deep.
