Circa 2003 Philip Treacy Earthy Gold Feather Headpiece

About the Item

Philip Treacy is a milliner who has done what most modern day milliners cannot; he has become a renowned milliner. Irish born Treacy has designed hats for British royalty, as well as for design houses directed by fashion royalty like Karl Lagerfeld and the late Alexander McQueen. This delightful Treacy confection features a sprig of feathers that swirl up into a helter-skelter halo of earthy golds. The structure starts with a basic headband made from a double-width curved wire with gold-covered coating. An asymmetrical bow is constructed from a dark gold synthetic ribbon that cleverly loops in and out of its knot. The seemingly random nature of the feathers belies the technical skill required to design a mass of curvilinear elements with flawless visual balance. Trimmed feathers punctuate this arrangement in sharp diamond forms. While this piece has extremely modern versatility, its ornateness evokes the fashionable drama of another time. As Amy M. Spindler of The New York Times so aptly puts it, “What is most astonishing about Mr. Treacy’s hats is that they aren’t quite hats at all, which is what earned him a standing ovation for a show rife with Victorian hauteur” (March 5, 1996). Size: One size fits all This headpiece by Philip Treacy is in excellent condition, and comes with its original hat box. Constructed with a basic headband base, it integrates beautifully with any hair color and style. The headband is made from coated wire that folds back on itself to form a double-width band. The bow, which is positioned on the right side of the headband, is made from a synthetic gold webbed ribbon. A large cluster of trimmed and curled feather are adhered above the back bow, with some threaded down through the knot. The designer label is affixed to the underside of the headband.
