Liberty of London Aesthetic Printed Chiffon Souffle Shawl, Early 20th Century

About the Item

Rare, Aesthetic Liberty of London damask chiffon souffle printed shawl from the early 20th century. This varicolored muted shawl features exotic Persian style motifs, printed and brocaded on a ground of sheer ivory and black silk chiffon souffle. The multi-colored, serpentine motifs form a layered effect with the richly textured multi hued, persian-style patterns. The shawl also features a padded Chinese floral rosette closure, a detail often used in Liberty designs to fasten shawls and garments. Length 100", Width 38". Excellent Condition . Liberty & Co. of London started out as an importer of Oriental wares, including fabrics. Liberty's began producing its own fabrics in 1879 and soon became famous for luxurious silks, most suited to the clinging robes and draperies worn by the artistic community (Aesthetic Dress). Liberty's introduced delicate pastel tints, like the delicate colors of this shawl, referring to these hues as Art Colors. Today these colors are synonymous with Art Nouveau, the movement in reaction against the academic schools of art at the end of the 19th century (1894-1914). In 1884 Liberty's introduced a costume department under Edward Godwin, a distinguished architect and founding member of the Costume Society. His vision mirrored that of Arthur Liberty in creating in-house apparel to challenge the fashions of Paris. Although Godwin died in 1886, his artistic inspiration endured within Liberty's. Godwin's death, and that of Dante Gabriel Rossetti in 1882, William Morris in 1896, and the departure of American artist Whistler for Paris, foretold the end of the Aesthetic Movement. A new artistic movement was emerging with Libertys at its center. Liberty & Co. was so closely identified with the origins of "Art Nouveau that the movement was known in Italy as" Stile Liberty'.
