1994 Book On the History & Fashion of Chatelaines

About the Item

If chatelaines are your thing then curl up with this book for a good dose of eye candy ... if you don't know much about chatelaines then you will have a great appreciation after reading this book. Written by Genevieve Cummins and Nerylla Taunton, and published in 1994 by the Antique Collector's Club of England, 'Chatelaines, Utility to Glorious Extravagance' is 312 pages of history, photography and pop culture surrounding the waist hung appendages that were usually used by women to keep up with keys, watches, perfume bottles, coins, spectacles, sewing accessories, etc. Though chatelaines were used in medieval times, this book concentrates on the Victorian era when chatelaines were at their heyday. Really fascinating information that touches on fashion and utilitarianism ... not to mention many of the items are so charming. Just envision Mrs. Hughes from Downton Abbey! Hardbound book measures 11" x 8.75" x 1.25", 312 pages, 300 color photos and drawings, 190 black/white photos and drawings. CONDITION Good previously owned condition with wear to the dust jacket and age related spotting to the edge of the pages visible at the spine. This 1970's two piece dress and jacket ensemble by Victoria Royal is quite a ladylike version of a tuxedo. The cropped collarless jacket is embellished with a beaded trellis pattern that compliments the beading on the dress. Both pieces are in a weighty sea foam blue matte satin.
