1950s Harald Ochre Boucle Wool Loose Coat with Pleating on Shoulders

About the Item

An oversized ochre boucle wool long-length overcoat by London society couturier Harald. The heavy, textured coat is softly pleated and features a wide collar, pleated shoulders and full-length leg-o’-mutton sleeves with fitted cuffs. The loose-fitting coat hangs open with no fastenings and features a terracotta silk lining and a single oversized brown ‘wooden effect’ plastic button at each wrist. This coat belonged to Miranda Quarry’s mother and so is estimated to date from the late 1950s. Good vintage condition; a significant hole to the front waist (which can be mended) and some staining to the bottom of the interior lining. A rebel by nature, Miranda blazed a nonconformist trail through a series of boarding schools and by her late teens, on the advice of a psychiatrist, she left schooling permanently and travelled to Barcelona, which marked the beginning of her peripatetic life. During her travels around Europe in the 60s, she fully embraced the worlds of art, dance, fashion and music. It was during this time that she met her first husband, the late great comedic acting legend Peter Sellers. Although a brief marriage (1971-1974), she has always maintained fond memories of her time with him stating that, ‘It was a privilege to have spent as much time as I did with Peter. He was one of the kindest and most generous people who ever walked this earth’. Miranda began to build her extensive collection of couture garments during her marriage to Sellers, purchasing couture from historic Parisian houses such as Dior and Givenchy as well as from the British designers of the moment, including Ossie Clark and Zandra Rhodes.
