Camel-haired Berber Burnous - North Africa Circa 1900-1920

Rare Berber Burnous woven from camel or dromedary hair, originating from the Algerian or Tunisian desert gates. The handloom weaving is particularly fine, with both the softness and roughness of camel hair. Open at the front and adorned with Carmine silk embroidery on the chest and the perimeter of a very large bonnet trimmed with matching tassels. Piped at the bottom with a matching carmine silk cord. Dating from Pierre Loti's period, when Orientalism was particularly fashionable, rustic camel weavings are relatively rare. There are a few areas of tiny moth holes, otherwise clean, no major flaws. To wear or collect. Good overall structural condition.
