Iconic Romeo Gigli Orientalist Cocoon Coat

Price Upon Request

Italian designer Romeo Gigli (born 1949) won renown for almost singlehandedly causing the renaissance of elaborate beading and drapery with the use of luxury fabrics such as velvet, brocade and taffetas, all in a modern manner.
This particular coat is a superb example of Romeo Gigli's watershed Orientalist collection for fall winter of 1989-90.

Romeo Gigli became a fashion force in the 1980's (at the height of the Japanese fashion invasion) by reproportioning and editing unusual cuts through his baroque eye. Here he cuts an oversized Poiret-esque cocoon coat in burgundy cotton velvet. A wide border of lavish, hand applied silver lame roses and gilded tinsel embroidery encircles the edges of the coat. Wide kimono sleeves are held and bound with antique gold lame ribbon by wearer.
Worn as shown on Linda Evangelista in 1989 Paris Vogue with miniaturized menswear separates, crisp tapered pants and taffeta tied mules, this was his modernist take on romantic dressing.
