Early 2000s Coats and Outerwear

By 2000, control of Issey Miyake’s label was firmly in the hands of Naoki Takizawa. Having served as an assistant since 1982, he was appointed as the head of menswear in 1994, and as creative director in 1999. Once fully at the helm, Takizawa opted to collaborate with legendary pop artist Takashi Murakami, an inspired choice which marked a distinct change for the fabric design-oriented label. Several new dye colors were concocted for the collaboration, and the pieces were styled reversed on the runway, with the outerwear and trousers being worn inside out. The interiors displayed Mr. Dob and several of Murakami’s other well known characters, while the exteriors were utilitarian, and could be worn as traditional workwear jackets and pants.
