1970s Ted Lapidus Boho Silk and Leather Dress
About the Item
Original 1970s Ted Lapidus boho shirtwaister dress. A wonderful creation by this revered designer who began his long fashion career at the House of Dior in 1951. This couture labelled 100% silk dress has an outstanding Russian peasant aesthetic with several distinct but complimentary prints. The main print features blue and red liveried Cossack riders on horse back hunting with forest animals and interspersed with a floral and cream background. The other prints are a wide floral paisley band against a white background, a dark red floral and zigzag band and a plain navy border.
Construction is complex with lots of design features including a shirt-collar neckline, shoulder epaulettes and popper fastening cuffs. The dress is lace-up and has eyelets instead of a button stand with 2 x tan suede leather ties; these both finish in a decorative leather and painted toggle and were designed to be extra long. We have styled these into a bow in the pictures but they look great left loose. To the front, there is a concealed half zip to the skirt portion of the dress for access. From the elasticated waistband, the skirt gently flares into a pleated arrangement with a centre front kick pleat leading down to the bottom hem. A braided leather belt in navy, red and tan colours completes the look.
This dress is in extraordinary vintage condition with only gentle signs of wear and no faults of any note. Would fit UK size 8 - 10, US 4 - 6 best with a petite waist.

- 1960s Jean Muir Silk Liberty Floral Print Dress with ScarfBy Jean MuirLocated in London, GBThis is a fine Jean Muir 1960s dress and matching tassel scarf and is without question, the best ensemble from this designer we have ever had in our collection. Early in her career, Muir worked with Liberty fabric and this striking psychedelic silk print could certainly be a Liberty design. It features a riot of bright purple, blue, orange, pink and green tones in a stylised paisley print. Each of the designs, contained in long rows of bands, is slightly different. The dress is a high shirtwaister design with an empire line bust, a low scoop neck and it fastens at the front with 18 fabric buttons and loops. There is a little upturned ruffle on the waistband and the skirt is gently gathered. The sleeves have a gathered cuff and upturned ruffle that echoes the waistline. The dress bodice is not lined; however, the skirt is lined in a quality pink viscose. Labelled a UK size 12, this is small in today's sizing and probably a better fit for a UK 8-10 or US 4-6. The accompanying scarf is a double thickness triangular shape with a row of hand tied purple tassels down one side. It is doubled sided with one print matching the dress while the other side is the same design but in a different colourway, focusing on blues, turquoises and orange. It's an absolutely beautiful piece worn alone or could could be styled either side to compliment or contrast the dress colourway. A very rare set indeed to find in superb vintage condition and from the very earliest part of Jean Muir's career. One for the serious collector, wearer of fine boho...Category
