Edwardian French Couture Ball-gown with furbelows on Chiné Silk Circa 1900

About

France Circa 1895/1900 Ball-gown in two parts, bodice and skirt, inspired by Louis XIII dating from the Belle Epoque. Background in cream silk damask with satin and moiré garlands printed on a chain as chiné from the 18th century. Large undulating stems busy with generous blooming flowers in pastel shades of pink and green. Old-fashioned boned bustier with a wide low-cut neckline, wide folded collar and tails adorned with emerald-green velvet and older Venice lace. Three quarter-length sleeves with double-furbelows engageantes finely wrinkled with celadon-green and emerald-green silk crepe. Elaborate work of the back tails with folded sides. Applique of dark green ribbon adorned with rhinestone buttons. Label gold on cream background Madame Mirecour 6 Place de la Madeleine Paris. Some splits to restaure on the skirt. Good condition of color and conservation. Dimensions: Equivalent size 34 France. The taste for the Renaissance and Louis XIII style returns in force around 1890 and is declined in the decorative arts of this period, in particular in the furniture and fashion. This clothes of historicism inspiration, superimposes the styles Louis XIII and Louis XV. It denotes a pronounced taste for the overload of ornaments with rich effects. In addition, the print on chain establishes a direct link with the chiné of the eighteenth century. Invented by the Lyon manufacturers who dominated the silk market in the Enlightenment, it is an elaborate technique of dyeing the chain yarns before weaving, producing this so characteristic ikat fuzzy effect, and imitated the following centuries, especially in Asia. Piece presented in 2017 at the Museum of Art of the city of Toulon as part of the exhibition "Falbalas, portraits et mode au féminin 1850-1930". Handle with care. Clean and fresh fabric, no stains, green muslin, furbelows and decoration in perfect condition. Bodice in excellent condition. Note a structural fragility of the skirt that has some slits in the silk, fully restorable. Not noticeable in mannequin presentation. Small defects taken into account in the price.
