About the Item

Breathtaking ivory silk-chiffon glass beaded dress created by Italian designer Fernando Sarmi when he was head designer for Elizabeth Arden during the 1950's. Ferdinando Sarmi expressed interest in fashion during his youth but was discouraged from pursuing a design career by his father. Sarmi stated in a 1965 interview with Time, "in Italy, when the oldest son tells his father he wants to be a dress designer, it's like a woman saying she intends to be a prostitute." In the late 1950's he developed a wonderful reputation as a top designer, wooing an influential clientele that included celebrities, New York socialites and foreign dignitaries. Pat Nixon wore a Sarmi gown to her husband's second Inaugural Ball in 1957. He was best known for opulent evening looks and for his use of extravagant fabrics. This heavenly grecian goddess dress is a perfect example of his genius. The low-cut plunge bodice has very unique draped sashes that gather at the side. To this garment, he adds sparkling silver glass-beads which create so much depth and texture. The design elements alone make this a magnificent work of art. This figure flattering showstopper accentuates the bust, nips in at the waist and skims the hips as it flows to a gorgeous tea-length. The yards and yards of flowing chiffon used finish this garment off with a perfect ethereal vibe. The inside is immaculate and all hand-finished. Perfectly working back metal-zipper. Only sign of age is very faint discolor by the armholes. Please message for detailed pictures.
