1950's Historical Yma Sumac Strapless Pink-Ombre Satin Gown
First, I must say I feel very blessed and honored to have clothing from the great Yma Sumac in my care. Damon, her personal assistant and dear friend, has partnered up with Timeless Vixen to offer these extremely rare treasures on 1st dibs.
Yma Sumac (1922–2008) was a noted Peruvian soprano and the original Queen of Exotica. Her International fame began in the early 1950's. She was one of the most famous proponents of exotica music. She is remembered best for her extraordinary vocal range, which was well over four and a half octaves. She was also quite the fashionista, and in 2010 'V' fashion magazine voted her one of the top 5 World Muses!
This stunning rhinestone pink-satin ombre gown was used in one of her many sold-out performances. I love the seductive low-cut fully-boned strapless plunge. As you can see from the original pictures, the garment had a silk-organza underlay which is no longer present. As Damon told me, "Yma Sumac herself was behind the making of any of her custom made clothes. She loved elegance mixed with a touch of exotic. Having seen mostly black and white photos, it was a fascinating experience to see so much color in her garment. I was also fascinated to see how much effort was put into each piece and the contraptions she had added inside for the perfect physique no matter what her age or weight at the time." A piece like this is one-of-a-kind and a true piece of celebrity history.
