1970s Spectacular Geoffrey Beene Silk Gown

About

What you can't see at first glance wit this particular gown is that the metallic silk chiffon that creates that spectacular tie at the waist is semi transparent. AS the long ties wrap around the body the layering of them makes it opaque but at the base where this fabric connects the upper bodice to the skirt you actually get a glimpse of skin under the fabric. You can style the ties to take advantage of that or completely cover it. This play on transparent cut outs is a staple of Beene's that you see even in his early work of the sixties. In this gown he takes it to a more sophisticated level. The inset at the middle is all attached and you can style it a zillion ways. I have deliberately left the ties hanging long so you can get an idea of their length and expanse. Above and below this is a printed silver and black silk. Yards of it are used in the skirt so when you move you can really get a sense of its fullness. The bodice is formed around the inset and really consists of capped shoulders and a puffed short sleeve. A detail I love is the underskirt that is edged in black lace so you get just a peek of it from under the exterior skirt. This is really couture level workmanship and an extraordinary gown! Excellent, appears unworn condition condition.

The skirt is fully lined with a black silk chiffon edged with a wide panel of black lace at its hem. The silk taffeta portions of the bodice is lined in the same silk chiffon. It close with a series of fabric covered buttons and a low back zipper with an inner waist stay. Each sleeve has elastic in its cuff
