About the Item

This amazing piece sold through Bonwit Teller, Philadelphia, C.1950, and is intended to be an evening coat but it could easily turn heads as a dress all on its own. The heavy weight black silk faille fabric is tiered at the bodice providing a portrait style collar and a cape silhouette at the back. The cinched waist is emphasized by darts and follows the 'New Look' trend of the early 1950's and the front sports a hidden hook to keep everything in place. Fully lined with hidden side pockets. If planning to wear it as a dress, you might need to add more hook closures or consider adding a belt as shown in photographs 14 and even a crinoline would be nice as shown in photograph 15. Please note: the belt and the crinoline in the photographs are not included but both are available in separate listings on the Modern & Moore home page. CONDITION The coat dress is in very good condition with a little wear to the fabric at the darts on the waist as shown in photograph 13. It does not affect the integrity of the fabric or the wearability of the dress. SIZING & MEASUREMENTS The size is not marked though the dress best fits a U.S. size 4 with attention to the following measurements which were taken with the front hooked closed. For visual reference, the mannequin in the photographs is a size 4. 19th Century Central Asian Embroidered Chyrpy Mantle Cloak

Late 19th Century woman's mantle cloak or Chyrpy with the artistic hallmarks of the Tekke tribe of Turkmenistan. Though the cloak appears to have sleeves, it is actually intended to drape from the head with the sleeve style tassels hanging in the back. The cloak is primarily made from pieced silk textiles with intricate stitching that creates traditional patterns including a stylized flower and geometric shapes. The hem is decorated with heavy silk fringe and the interior is lined in contrasting printed cotton fabrics. Fall Winter 2003 Collection France A black wool coat dress (look 14) by Julien MacDonald for Givenchy in 2003. Inspired by 18th century coats, the bottom is made of double black faille fabric covered with a wool felt with large black embroidered perforations. Tubular three-quarter sleeves, wide theatrical folded collar and coat crossing closed in front by hooks. Two side slits allow a felt belt to be passed through to curve the coat in front while freeing the volume at the back ending in a train, in the manner of the French Dresses! Black taffeta lining. No defects. Very good condition of color and conservation. Dimensions: Equivalent size France 36-38. Front height 163 cm, back height with train 206 cm, shoulders 40 cm, chest 90 cm, waist 76-80 cm, sleeves 46 cm, hips 86-90 cm. Givenchy is part of one of the most famous French fashion house. Hubert de Givenchy, who worked with Elsa Schiaparelli, founded it in 1952. An admirer of Cristobal Balenciaga, he set up shop next to his master friend on Avenue Georges V in Paris in 1969. Hubert de Givenchy represented French chic throughout the world.
