An elegant couture cocktail dress retaining original labels: "Made to Order Bergdorf Goodman “ and client name/number: "Mrs. P. Roebling 12/16/65 #16034” This chocolate chiffon cocktail dress is a tribute to the work of designer Gerard Pipart who from 1964 held the position of couture designer for Nina Ricci for over 30 years, Pipart is credited with popularizing the “afternoon” dress (an elegant transitional day to evening garment) as well as his “3 pieces look” (skirt-blouse-jacket combination which was universally copied and remains a wardrobe mainstay even today. Pipart’s background as an assistant at Balmain, Fath, as well as with Marc Bohan at Patou provided him with enviable experience in haute couture. His couture collections included elegant daytime wear, sumptuous coats, and extravagant evening looks; yet at the same time his clothes earned praise as "never, never too haute.” His love of glamour is seen in dresses of frothy chiffon; bright, opulent taffeta, long-waisted, cinched, with high trumpet sleeves and luxuriant billowing folds. Using fur trim, ruffles, lace and ribbon, Pipart remained true to feminine, Parisian elegance in all of his designs. His fans/clients included the queens of Thailand and Norway, Grand Duchess Josephine-Charlotte of Luxembourg, Marcella Perez de Cuellar, and, as seen here Mrs. P. Roebling (Roebling family of Brooklyn Bridge fame) This is a beautiful dress in floaty chocolate chiffon with mink trim; it has all the details Pipart so loved. A short flirty skirt with a crossover bodice, cinched at the waist with a satin belt. The collar and cuffs are trimmed with mink; a nod to the opulent little finishing touches with which Gerard Pipart distinguished his designs.
