A Dufy/Poiret Printed Silk Pongee Couture Dress For Atelier Martine Circa 1915

France-Paris Circa 1915 A sleeveless and straight Sac day dress designed by Raoul Dufy for the Atelier Martine. Cream pongee silk printed with stylized generous roses alternately in red and black. Small embroidered diamond shape on the chest signed MM. Long matching silk belt, ending with trimmings of small covered silk balls. Red silk piping to the seams of the bottom of the dress, collar and shoulders. Very delicate smocked folds on the shoulders. Without under dress and without label. Provenance - Family of the Parisian aristocracy. Some rare transfers of color on the silk at the shoulders, very difficult to notice. Very good condition of color and conservation. Dimensions: Equivalent French Size 36/38 Height 115 cm Shoulders 31 cm Collar 11 cm Chest 88 cm Waist 82 cm Hips 94 cm Belt 201 cm Iconic theme designed by Paul Iribe in 1913, the theme of the rose by Paul Poiret will be declined in Atelier Martine, the name of his second daughter, the "Sultan of Fashion" will develop with Raoul Dufy. "What echoes this exciting period of my life does not wake up in me! Thanks to Poiret and Bianchini-Férier I was able to realize this relationship of art and decoration, especially to show that decoration and painting are quenched at the same source " resume Raoul Dufy. In 1910, Paul Poiret and Raoul Dufy set up an atelier of printing fabric "La petite usine" where Dufy drew the motifs, engraved the woods used for printing, studied the necessary chemical techniques and sometimes even printed on them. In 1912, he signed a contract with the Lyon silk company Bianchini-Férié. He will flourish at once the ornamental stylization of his subjects: flowers, animals, characters, and his penchant for color which is the very expression of his pleasure of painting. In our case, this drawing with the repetitive power of a random pencil stroke, evokes the simultaneous contrasts of the color that Sonia Delaunay will start later. Provenance- Family of Parisian Aristocracy.
