Jean Patou silk gold top and natural linen Maxi-skirt evening ensemble, c.1970s

About the Item

It is impossible to think of the history of French fashion without referring to Jean Patou. With contemporaries such as Edward Molyneux, Lucien Lelong and others. The couturier’s talent and aesthetics contributed to what is known as the “golden age of haute couture” which took place during the 1920s and 1930s. Patou’s vision helped to modernise and revolutionise fashion by freeing the female body from the constraints of fashion from early decades. The designers who designed for the house after the death of its founder, from Marc Bohan, Karl Lagerfeld to Jean Paul Gaultier, stayed faithful to Patou’s philosophy. Whilst design remained important, simplicity, movement and colour are characteristic of the Patou style. This evening ensemble accurately captures both the zeitgeist of a moment in fashion and the simplicity and elegance of Patou’s aesthetic. Truly of its time yet timeless. The maxi length natural linen skirt adorned with an exquisitely hand-printed flower design evokes the optimism and youthfulness of the 1970s. And the butterfly sleeves blouse, scintillating with the luxurious saffron silk twill from Lyon silk manufacturer Bianchini-Ferier, shows that fashion can be fresh, contemporary without compromising on luxury and elegance. Finished with precision. The skirt full is gathered at the waist and features two lining. One made from a silk-like viscose material and another from tulle. Closure is on the side with a metal zip. The blouse fastens with silk covered buttons at the rear.

  • Yves Saint Laurent Chinese collection baroque print satin dress, 1977
    By Yves Saint Laurent
    Located in London, GB
Yves Saint Laurent's Chinese collection corresponded with the launch of the fragrance Opium. Similar to previous folkloric inspired collections, the Chinese collection is also about a release of imagination, dreams and the mystery that foreign lands evoked. This cheongsam dress, a modern Chinese garment, in Yves Saint Laurent's collection symbolises the exotic and erotic Shanghai nightlife of the 1920s-1930s. The unique cut of the dress features a slit that can be unbuttoned all the way up to the shoulder to seduce, reveal and celebrate feminine sensuality. Constructed from the most fluid and luxurious satin material, the cheongsam, it is adorned with jet buttons and trimmed with braids on the cuffs, hem and collar. Lined with jet black fluid satin material the dress looks and feels luxurious. The print gives an iridescent surface pattern, that suggests the iconography of woven and embroidered imperial Chinese dragons robes...
