About the Item

The bare mid-drift was one of the most risqué fashion trends of the late 1930s. Hollywood designer Adrian himself was nearly fired for dressing Joan Crawford in one in "The Women" It was nearly as scandalous as sling-back shoes! isn't fashion funny that way though, whats fashion forward one day is a timeless classic the next. Here American designer Jean Carol has nodded to the trend with a sheer net panel across the torso. The edges of which have been melded into the crepe with sequined flowers. The sequins bring the eyes right to the primary design element and add the allure of sparkle to this evening gown. This is a gorgeous dress by designer Jean Carol, who was highly respected during the 1930s and 40s. This gown is from the late 1930s, with the classic '30s streamlined silhouette and effortless elegance. The skirt is gently fluted, falling close to the body as a result of the beautiful drape of the cloth. The sleeves are gathered over the point of the shoulder and down the upper arm, giving them a structural, architectural quality which balances the watery flow of the skirt, and the smooth V of the neckline reinforces this effect. In between the structural top and the flowing skirt is a panel of sheer chiffon over the ribs in the upwards V seen so often in 1930s styles. This is embroidered heavily above and below with black sequins, which creep like branches or vines over the bust and down to the hips, drawing the eye inevitably back to the small point of the ribs and waist and creating a wonderful hourglass effect. The simple elegance of the black crepe and smooth silhouette allow the fantastical, romantic effect of the sequined scrollwork to take center stage. In back, the sheer-and-sequin panel dips down towards the base of the spine, meeting on each side of the long line of perfect fabric buttons which extends from the deep V neck to below hip-level with that understated yet undeniable 1930s sexiness. This is truly a fairy-tale dress, and its balance of whimsical and architectural elements will make it perfect for a variety of formal occasions.
