Late 19th Century Central Asian Silk Ikat Chapan Robe Coat

About the Item

A beautiful late 19th Century silk woman's robe from the Fergana Valley region of Uzbekistan, Central Asia. The robe is in a traditional silk Ikat pattern displaying shades of green and magenta. It is lined in a Russian cotton red floral with striped banding. There is an unexpected web of purple stitching under each arm that cinches the fit and is a characteristic of a woman's robe as compared to a man's robe. Photograph 11 shows the robe belted with a 1980's cummerbund which is not included and shown for style suggestion only. This special piece is from the estate and private collection of Peggy Slappey, a well traveled lady who passionately collected textile art from Central Asia. This robe was part of a 2016 exhibit at the Birmingham Museum of Art which displayed textiles from Ms. Slappey's extensive collection. The robe is pictured on page 42 of the exhibit catalog, a copy of which is included. CONDITION The robe is in remarkably good condition though there are some age related discolorations throughout and small tears to the fabric. Examples of these flaws can be seen in photographs 12, 13, 14 and 15. SIZING & MEASUREMENTS The robe is small in size and would best fits a U.S. sizes 4 - 6 with attention to the following measurements taken with the robe partially closed as shown in photograph 1. For visual reference, the mannequin in the photographs is a size 4.
