Maison Gripoix Byzantine Poured Glass Compact

About the Item

Maison Gripoix decorated compact in the byzantine taste. Gilt metal, faux pearls with ruby, emerald and sapphire poured glass enamel, further embellished with crystal pastes. Handmade in France, 1950's. Excellent condition. 3" x 1". Original Elizabeth Arden pressed powder and Logo powder puff. Founded in 1890, the House of Gripoix is one of the oldest if not the oldest in the trade. The artisans of Gripoix were among the first to master the techniques of glass enamelling, the sheening of fake pearls and various other techniques of the art of parure so essential to the world of haute couture. Gripoix's treasured petites mains, the artisans who toil tirelessly in cramped workshops to create the exquisite details that transform a beautiful garment into a sumptuous showpiece worthy of haute couture, have over the years turned out extraordinary pieces for Lanvin, Paul Poiret, Worth, Givenchy, Yves Saint-Laurent, Jean Louis Scherrer, Lilly Dache, Elizabeth Arden, Marc Jacobs . In particular, the House of Gripoix is credited with developing the pearl sheening that perfectly imitates cultured pearls and for which the House of Chanel has become famous.

The veils serve multiple functions, including protecting the women’s face from sun damage, filtering dust from the air, displaying adornment, and demonstrating wealth or status. The niqab worn by Bedouin women on special occasions are sometimes elaborately decorated with coins and beads, like this one. Such masks are not for everyday use; they would be too hot and heavy.
