Anglo-Indian Victorian Jewellery box with mirror and fob box

About the Item

Materials: Wood, bone Period: Late 19th century Country: England Good condition for its age and use Minor defects that do not interfere with the overall view of the whole Dimensions: 7 x 10 x 12.5 cm. Fob: 5 cm in diameter. Extraordinary fob mirror box made in an exquisite Anglo-Indian style, in the Victorian era (1837 – 1901), in India. It has a simple structure of probably exotic wood that is profusely decorated to achieve a beautiful object. These ornaments are based on hollow carved, openwork and pyrographed plates. It has both geometric inlays and chains and floral motifs, and cartouches, where more elements are engraved with fire, endless chains of plant elements and even, on the main cartouche, the goddess Shiva. In addition, a remarkable texture is achieved by the small spheres and rivets, which, in addition to serving a structural function, emphasize the symmetrical design of the box. It is raised by four lion's claws also carved from bone. The lid of the box is domed, and when opened, a frame unfolds inside that holds the fob made of mercury-gilded bronze. This fob has intricate motifs that are repeated on both sides. Inside, a mirror. In the early 18th century, Indian craftsmen made what became known as Anglo-Indian boxes for English residents living in India, who would eventually take them or send them to England. In the early 19th century, India began exporting these boxes, although not in significant quantities until the 1850s. People valued them so much that even English tin makers copied their designs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These exotic boxes were manufactured and retailed in Madras and Calcutta by the English and Dutch East India Companies. Anglo-Indian boxes fall into four groups: Rosewood or ebony inlaid boxes; veneered sandalwood boxes; sandalwood boxes covered with Sadeli mosaic; and carved boxes, often combined with Sadeli mosaic. The first two categories come from Vizagapatam in eastern India, while the last two come from Bombay in western India. In good condition, the pictures serve as a description of the piece, the key is preserved and a fob mirror is missing, nothing to detract from the overall view. It can be used as a jewellery box or as a treasure box due to its rich ornamentation and meticulous detailing
